Shine Your Light
We were very excited to launch our new project, Shine Your Light! In this nine week unit of study, we will investigate light in two different ways: The light within our world, and the light within ourselves. First, we will become scientists as we learn about and experiment with a variety of different types of light in our world. Our investigations will center on sunlight, electricity, refraction and reflection. We will also be mathematicians as we study the connection between time and sunlight. Our math instruction will focus on telling time, elapsed time, and sundials.
Alongside of this, we will look at the light inside ourselves. Each of us is unique and has our own special strengths and talents that we bring to our world. In this project we will celebrate the things that make us who we are, and look at ways can use our light to help make a change or difference in our wold. We will use poetry and self- portraits as ways of shining our inner lights. Students will design and create their own light fixture as a way to shine light into the world.
This week, we launched our project with a focus on our inner lights. We read the book Electric Wizard: How Nikola Tesla Lit Up the World. Through this story we saw examples of different kinds of light in our world, and discussed Tesla's inner light and passion to pursue his dream of lighting up the world using his alternating current. We used this story as an opportunity to talk about our unique inner lights:What are you passionate about? What makes you special?
