Becoming Risk Takers
Our first project will be a 9 week project based around the questions “Why do we take risks?” and “What do we need in order to take a risk?”. In this project students will be reading books, hearing from community experts, and participating in off-campus field work, in order to compile a list of character traits that might help them take risks in and out of the classroom. Students will be making group and personal goals and thinking about how we can use the characteristics of a “risk taker” in order to meet those goals. During this project, we will also be focusing on building a classroom community where students care about those around them, and persevere when faced with a problem. Students will be making several products to share their learning at exhibition night in the fall.
During this project, students will have multiple opportunities to experience what it feels like to take a risk.
Field Trips:
As part of our current project Becoming Risk Takers, we will be venturing out into the community to take a risk as a grade level. We will be rock climbing at Solid Rock Gym in San Marcos on Thursday, September 25th. This trip will cost $10 per child. As always, this is a donation and not required. Each class will need volunteers to both help supervise and to drive students. Please note: We might not be able to take every chaperone interested. If this is the case, we will let you know ASAP. We will be leaving the school at 9:30am and returning after our picnic lunch at 1:00pm.
In order to chaperone you will need to have the following:
- Volunteer Guidelines form signed
- TB test, the test needs to be less than 4 years old
- Current Identification card
- Megan's Law background check (this is something we do in school)
If you are able to drive students to and from Solid Rock Gym, you will also need:
- Volunteer Guidelines form signed
- TB test, the test need to be less than 4 years old
- Megan's Law background check (this is something we do in school)
- Drivers License
- Insurance Coverage
* The minimum liability recommended by HTH to be carried by field trip drivers is a combined single limit of $300,000 for bodily injury, property damage, and uninsured motorists. (this is in our parent handbook)
- Driver Form completed
(Please see Susan at the front desk for this form)
We are excited to take this risk together!
In Class "Risk Taking" Opportunities:
-Blind Folded Partner Walk This was where students were led across the playground by a partner while they wore a blind fold.
-Mystery Box This was where students put their hands into multiple boxes containing unknown items. Ask your child about it!
-Theater Workshop We had Ms. Becky come in and give our students a Theater Workshop where they learned a song and dance and acted out the story of "The Three Little Pigs."
Experts
We had the wonderful opportunity to have our first expert "Risk Taker" come in a talk with the students! Retired Fire Chief Mr. Dominic came in to speak to the students about taking risks in his profession. Ask your child about it!
We also had Mr. Brian come in to talk about his experience as a Helicopter Pilot!
Exhibition
The students were incredible during our Risk Taker Exhibition. Our final product was a beautiful colorful book full of stories of times where each student took a risk. Students shared the process of our project, read our book to visitors, and even gave advice on what to do if you want to take a risk! Below is a video showed at exhibition reflecting on various parts of our project!
